Tutorials

With the start of winter break and FRC Kickoff just a few weeks away, now's the time to prepare for the coming build season.

We will setup helpful links for use during the build season. These links include information and tutorials related to all things FIRST.

Winter PotLuck

Thanks to all those from the Advanced Robotics class and VEX Robotics Club who participated in the Winter potLuck.

The PotLuck was a huge success with a lot of participants bringing food/drinks for the PtLuck.

We also had a lot of Arcadia High School graduates who came back to visit the club/class during the PotLuck. Many of these graduates will serve as mentors for the 2013 FRC season.

As the week comes to an end, the team is preparing for the FRC Kickoff on January 5. Good luck to all teams.

Approaching the FRC Kickoff

Kickoff is less than a month away!

With several intriguing game hints given over the 2013 FRC Game, numerous hypothesis have been proposed. Several proposals have been shot down but others remain. Will it be a water game? Will there be three alliances this year? Will we see another sports related game like last year? What will the autonomous period be this year?

These questions and many more will be resolved on January 5. Good luck to all teams.

JPL Invention Challenge Preliminary Rounds
November 10, 2012

Last Saturday, the Advanced Robotics class participated in the 2012 JPL Invention Challenge, participating in the preliminary rounds at the Chapman University campus.

The class left around 7:00 am and arrived at Chapman an hour later. The three teams quickly set up their devices and prepared their devices for the competition. The judges came along to inspect each of the devices before the start of the competition.

APN tagged along to cover the class's participation in the competition. The crew, the same crew that tagged along for the California Science center trip, interviewed the students from each team on their entry.

Each device were successfully able to launch the toilet rolls during the competition. Team 9, spin 2 win, went first among the Arcadia entries, with team 10, Vacuumtronix, going second and team 8 some time later.

The class had fun at the event. Special thanks to APN for covering the event. Also, thanks to the mentors/parents who helped to make the trip possible. Good work for all the students who participated. The challenge served as a great introduction for our students, allowing them to gain experience working with the tools, the engineering design process, and the engineering lab in P7. Our students are now ready to work on the Delta Zero robot for the FRC 2013 Build Season.

Fall Preview Day

Members of the Advanced Robotics and VEX Robotics Club participated in this year's Fall preview Day on Saturday November 3, 2012. Fall preview Day serves to inform incoming freshman for the 2013-2014 school year of the programs that students can participate in at Arcadia High School.

The display for the club/class booth included poster-boards for the VEX Robotics Club and Advanced Robotics Class, FRC 2011 robot Trinity 10 (Trinity X), VRC A-13 mk. 1 robot, the 2008 Visualization Award trophy, and numerous flyers on the Arcadia High School Engineering Program.

Special thanks to those who participated in the Fall Preview Event. They graciously reached out to curious parents and 8th graders about the program. Hopefully, we will see more freshmen joining the Engineering program and the VEX Robotics Club for the 2013-2014 school year.
California Science Center - NASA Space Fest

On October 31, 2012, the Arcadia High School Advanced Robotics class visited the California Science Center for the opening of the new Space Shuttle Endeavour exhibit. The goal of the Advanced Robotics class involvement in Space Fest is to help showcase how NASA utilizes to teach STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics); how to start FIRST teams; and to attract new forms of contribution.

The class separated into three teams, based on the JPL Invention Challenge teams, and took up shifts for the booth. While one team manned a both, the other teams were able to view other booths set up by NASA that included exhibits on Orion, Mars Scientific Laboratory, SpaceX's Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets, and the SLS rocket. The class brought a VEX Robots (VRC A-13 mk.1), a poster board, several posters, the 2008 Visualization Award trophy, along with several flyers on the FRC 867 team and the Engineering program that were passed out.

Apache News also sent a crew to film the event. You can see the the report by APN on next week's episode for Friday November 9.

All of the students had fun on the trip. Almost everyone got to see the space shuttle Endeavour, which is currently housed in a special temporary viewing area near the main building.
